In an unexpected and suprising acknowledgement that although only about a quarter of the nation's population lives in rural areas their roads account for more than half the
nation's highway deaths, the Bush administration announced a push this week to improve safety on country roads around the nation.
The U.S. Transportation Department plans to focus on reducing rural road
deaths by boosting the use of seat belts, fighting drunk driving and
improving road conditions. The department says it's going to work with
states to help rural areas tap about 287 million dollars in funding for
the efforts.
The head of the American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials says improving rural highway safety is
"critical" to the association's goal of "reducing highway fatalities by
half over the next two decades."
