Michigan's antiquated child safety seat law gets an upgrade starting in July, 2008 and Michigan parents have new requirements that hope to keep Michigan kids safer.
The problem with the old law was that it only required children to be in child safety seats up to the age of 4. Of course, any Michigan Deputy knows that the seats in modern vehicles are not made to hold a small child safely, and booster seats are truly necessary to keep those children safe.

Child Restraint Law in Michigan
Effective July 1, 2008
New Law
- Children under 8 and under 4’9” tall must be in a child restraint. A child restraint can be a car seat with harness straps or a booster seat used with the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt.
What Seat to Use?
- Some children under age 8 still fit in a regular car seat. Check the car seat owner’s manual for the weight limit of the harness straps. If your child has reached that limit, you many need to get a seat with a higher weight limit or use a booster seat.
Booster Seats
- Remember a booster seat must be used with a lap and shoulder belt, NEVER a lap belt only.
- There are two types of booster seats, no-back and high-back. To find out what type your child needs, click here. Booster seats are available at major retailers.
