DSAM Back to Work on Legislation for Corrections Deputies PDF Print E-mail

michigancapitol.jpgThe Deputy Sheriff's Association of Michigan is back to work, along with the Michigan legislature, on legislation that is vitally important to all Michigan's local Corrections Deputies.

DSAM is supporting two bills that would exempt local Corrections Deputies from CCW "No-Carry Zones" and would provide binding arbitration for those same Deputies.

Click the "Read More" link for more information on these important legislative initiatives supported by DSAM.

At the request of DSAM, State Representative Richard LeBlanc (D-Westland), a reserve Officer for Westland P.D., sponsored house bill 5969 that would exempt local Corrections Deputies, Reserve Officers and Deputies and Posse members from the current CCW "No Carry Zones".

This legislation has already passed through the Michigan house with an overwhelming vote and now awaits hearings in the senate.

The issue of binding arbitration has been a key legislative effort of DSAM's for years. We have done a good job of explaining the importance of this change to the legislators and in doing so building support for this much needed protection for our local Corrections Deputies and the communities they protect

This week House Bill 6112 was introduced by State Rep. Fred Miller (D-Macomb County). It is anticipated that a hearing in the House Labor Committee will take place on May 27, 2008. We have worked hard and feel we have bipartisan support for this important legislation.

I would think that this effort is a huge step in that direction. Even though it does not address "Peace Officers" directly it does include Reserve and Posse members which is what most Marine Patrols are comprised of.

Thanks for your comments though, and stay safe this summer!

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE DSAM HELP MARINE DEPS WITH SOME OF THESE ITEMS SUCH AS HAVING TO APPLY FOR A CCW WHEN WE ARE BY LAW CONCIDERED A PEACE OFFICER.PEACE OFFICERS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE A CCW BY LAW BUT WE ARE FORCED INTO GETTING ONE WHICH I FEEL IS WRONG.ANY LAW THAT DEALS WITH A PEACE OFFICER SHOULD BE EQUAL ACROSS THE BOARD.
