Academic Scholarship


The Deputy Sheriff's Association of Michigan (DSAM), along with DSAM founder and first president retired Wayne County Deputy Sheriff Jamil Akhtar, believe academic scholarships are an effective tool to improve recruitment into law enforcement and corrections fields.  DSAM is aware that scholarships allow deserving students a means to attain their educational goals, meet their professional objectives and succeed to their  fullest. To that end, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan established this educational scholarship with the following guidelines.

The Award

There will be four (4) cash scholarships of $500.00 each. One $500.00 scholarship will be awarded in each of the four (4) membership districts as defined by the By-Laws of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan. Counties defined by Areas A, B, C, and D can be found on the DSAM website at www.dsam-mi.org. Cash award scholarships will be made out to the recipient for use in his/her educational process.

Who is Eligible

Applicant must be a high school graduate or college student at time of Application Due Date. Applicant must also be a Regular or Supporting member, and/or a dependent of a member of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of  Michigan.  Membership in DSAM must be current for an applicant or their qualified dependant to be considered.  Weighted consideration will be given in respect to the course of study,  with preference given to Criminal Justice and Corrections disciplines.

Application Process

Applicant must attend an accredited community college or four year college / university in the state of Michigan and enroll in 12 hours or more in college credits per semester.

ImageApplicant must submit, with the official application, a resume reflecting past accomplishments, achievements and activities (community and school) as well as future goals and objectives.

Applicant must submit two recent photographs  of good likeness for possible media use. Photographs will not be returned.

Applicant may submit a letter of endorsement  from a current member of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan other than immediate family.

Applicants, either high school graduates or current college students, must submit a copy of their school transcripts with the official application form.

The official application form and required materials must be received by June 30, 2009 for the 2009/10 school year.
