The Detroit Free Press published an editorial this week opposing a recent 10% surcharge on items purchased by inmates in Michigan prison commissaries.
The tax on Michigan inmates was apparently levied in order to fund a State Trooper school. Although a worthy goal, the Free Press editorial points out that this tax will undoubtedly force the Department of Corrections into a position where they are supplying and paying for items normally purchased by inmates in the commissary.
The Free Press editorial states the Michigan Department of Corrections has also opposed this tax sighting security threats to inmates and guards.
MDOC spokesman Russ Marlan said the department opposed the surcharge.
"We're not opposed to funding a trooper school, but there are safety
and security issues when you do things like this," he said.
