The Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan (DSAM) is Michigan’s only statewide organization dedicated to protecting the interests of sheriff’s department employees.

Since 1978 DSAM has successfully protected the interests of sheriff’s department employees at the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of state government. DSAM has a proven record of legislative achievement. Some of our accomplishments include:

  • Wrote P.A. 416 (Secondary Road Patrol Statute) and successfully lobbied the legislature and governor for passage into law
  • Increased funding for patrols on secondary roads
  • Eliminated harmful provisions in the Fireman’s Rule
  • New statutory provisions for disarming a law enforcement/corrections officer
  • Exempted officers from certain provisions of the concealed weapons law
  • Prohibited criminals from possessing body armor and police scanners
  • Legalized use of TASERS for local corrections/law enforcement officers
  • Increased fleeing & eluding penalties
  • Statutorily mandated local correction officer certification and training

Although we have had success, during these tough budget times we cannot rest on our laurels. Like many public employees, public safety officers are affected by the decisions of elected officials and state bureaucrats.

Continued advancement of workplace conditions, training and job skills, and protecting our budgets requires dialogue with decision makers in Lansing. We want to be your voice on issues that are important to you!

As the saying goes, “there is strength in numbers.” We hope you will join DSAM today. You can become a member of DSAM today by clicking here, or if you have any questions please feel free to contact our office in Lansing at (517) 702-2697 or visit our website at www.dsam-mi.org. On behalf of DSAM’s membership and executive board, thank you for your time.
