DSAM is governed by an executive board operating under by-laws and rules of business. The executive board is comprised of the president, four area vice presidents, treasurer, secretary, sergeant-at-arms, and district representatives. All board members serve on a voluntary basis. DSAM employs a full-time executive director.

The vice presidents are elected from four vice presidential areas which are:

• The Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan
• Mid-Michigan
• West and SW Michigan
• SE Michigan

All four vice presidential areas have five districts which are separated based by county.
