Publice Act 312 Under Attack! PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 December 2009

michigancapitol.jpgRep. Joseph Haveman (R-Holland) on behalf of the Michigan Municipal League has launched an attack on P.A. 312 which, as you know, provides binding arbitration for Police Officer and Firefighters in contract disputes.

The bill (HB5325) would require that arbitrators consider a municipalities ability to pay. Now that doesn't seem all that unreasonable except when you consider the fact that arbitrators alread do that.

Even more sadly is that supporters of the bill have tried to tie it to public safety saying that arbitrated desicions have caused them to reduce the level of Police Officers and Firefighters across the state. How do you like that? We're the ones making the state unsafe.

Of course this does not take into consideration at all that there have been very few contract arbitrations across the state in the last few years and there have been plenty of Police and Fire associations who have agreed to reduce their pay in order to prevent layoffs.

John Buczek, executive director of the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police, said in a Free Press article that it’s “a bold face lie” to blame the arbitration law for fewer police and firefighters.
